A place of nature, history, and science.

Lake Lunz

Lake Lunz is the only natural lake in Lower Austria – and for centuries it has been the heart of the town. It shaped the landscape, the stories, and the way of life in the region. As early as the 19th century, it attracted summer visitors, artists, and travelers. Here, nature, culture, and recreation have long been intertwined.

The history of the lake is closely tied to the Kupelwieser family. Industrialist Paul Kupelwieser brought attention to the area. His son Hans Kupelwieser later created the floating stage, now the architectural landmark of the wellenklänge music festival.

Nature itself tells a story here. The lake consists of three parts – Vordersee, Mittelsee, and Hintersee. Fed by the Seebach and flowing into the Ybbs, it is home to rare fish, water birds, and unique plants. Each season adds its own charm: summer invites you to swim and hike, while winter turns the frozen lake into a magical skating ground.

The lake also plays a key role in science. With the WasserCluster Lunz, an internationally renowned research institute for limnology, Lake Lunz has become a hub for studying freshwater ecosystems. Scientists from around the world work here – making the lake both a place of relaxation and a laboratory for the future.

Whether swimming, walking, attending concerts, or learning from researchers – Lake Lunz shows how rich one single place can be. It unites history, nature, science, and culture, and invites you to experience it all yourself.
